Joe Ceballos

Joe Ceballos, the former "mayor" of Coldwater, Kansas, turned himself in to ICE detention on May 13, 2026, following a voter fraud case. A legal permanent resident for 50 years, Ceballos believed his green card allowed him to vote, but was charged in 2025 with illegal voting.

The Incident: Ceballos pleaded guilty in April 2026 to three misdemeanor counts of disorderly election conduct instead of felonies.

Charges & Resignation: As a noncitizen, he was ineligible to vote, leading to his resignation as mayor.

Sentencing & ICE Detention: He was sentenced to a $2,000 fine and no jail time in April 2026, but was subsequently ordered to report to ICE for potential deportation.

The case highlighted scrutiny over noncitizen voting, particularly with Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach filing charges.
